Senior Travel Insurance Over 70: Key Points at a Glance
| Question | What to Know |
|---|---|
| Can people over 70 get travel insurance? | Yes, but each insurer sets its own age eligibility. |
| Is there one UAE maximum age? | No. Current products show different maximum ages. |
| Does being eligible mean every medical condition is covered? | No. Age eligibility and pre-existing-condition coverage are separate issues. |
| Does every senior need medical screening? | No universal rule applies. Check the specific insurer’s application requirements. |
| Do premiums usually change with age? | Age can affect pricing, but there is no universal multiplier that applies to every insurer. |
| Is emergency medical coverage important? | Yes, but check the actual limit, deductible, exclusions and assistance rules. |
| Should evacuation be checked separately? | Yes. Medical treatment and medical evacuation can be different benefits. |
| Are chronic conditions automatically covered? | No. Read the pre-existing-condition definition and health declaration. |
| Can seniors use Schengen travel insurance? | Yes if they meet both the insurer’s age eligibility and applicable Schengen insurance requirements. |
| Is the cheapest senior policy automatically best? | No. Eligibility, medical protection, exclusions and trip needs should come before price. |
What Is Travel Insurance for Senior Citizens Over 70?
Travel insurance for senior citizens over 70 is not one regulated product category with one fixed set of benefits. It is travel insurance available to an older traveller who satisfies the age and eligibility rules of a particular policy.
Depending on the insurer, the policy may be:
- a standard single-trip product that accepts older applicants;
- a dedicated senior travel-insurance product;
- a Schengen-specific travel policy;
- an annual multi-trip policy with separate age rules; or
- a policy whose medical benefits or other terms change at particular age thresholds.
This distinction matters because an insurer can accept a traveller aged 78 while another insurer’s standard product may stop accepting new customers at 70 or 75.
The phrase “senior travel insurance” therefore should not be interpreted as:
“A special policy that automatically covers every person over 70, every existing medical condition and every overseas medical expense.”
The issued contract still determines eligibility, benefits and exclusions.

Can Seniors Over 70 Get Travel Insurance in the UAE?
Yes.
Current UAE product documentation provides clear examples of travel insurance being available beyond age 70.
Allianz Travel UAE currently publishes a Senior Travel policy specifically for individual UAE residents aged 66 to 85. The insurer’s senior page states that the maximum age is 85 at the time of purchase.[2]
ADNIC’s current travel-insurance FAQ states that its policy has a minimum age of 30 days and a maximum age of 80.[3]
Union Insurance publishes a narrower eligibility range, stating that its travel product is available to UAE residents under age 75.[4]
By contrast, GIG Gulf’s current Travel Smart policy states that it is available to people aged 70 or below.[5]
These differences show why comparison articles should never publish an unsupported statement such as:
“All UAE travel insurers cover seniors up to age 85.”
They do not.
Age limits are product-specific and can change, so confirm eligibility when requesting the actual quote.
Current UAE Travel Insurance Age-Limit Examples
The following examples are based on current provider-published information checked on August 29, 2026. They are included to demonstrate how much age eligibility can differ; they are not a ranking and are not an exhaustive list of every product available in the UAE.
| Provider / Product | Published Age Position | What It Means for Over-70 Travellers |
|---|---|---|
| Allianz Travel UAE Senior Travel | Dedicated senior product for ages 66–85 | A current example of a UAE-facing policy explicitly designed for people over 70. |
| ADNIC Travel Insurance | Published maximum age 80 | Potentially relevant to travellers in their early and later 70s, subject to the final product terms. |
| Union Insurance Travel | UAE residents under age 75 | Potentially relevant to some travellers aged 71–74, but not people at or above the published maximum. |
| GIG Gulf Travel Smart | Age 70 or below | The current Travel Smart policy is not an over-70 solution. |
The correct comparison method is therefore:
- confirm your exact age on the date relevant to the policy;
- confirm the policy’s maximum age;
- confirm whether the age rule differs for single-trip and annual products;
- check whether benefits change at a particular age; and
- obtain the final policy wording before payment.
Why Does Age Matter When Buying Travel Insurance?
Age is one of several factors insurers can use when defining eligibility, product structure and premium.
But older age should not be described as proof that a traveller is medically unfit.
Insurance eligibility and medical fitness are different questions.
A healthy 76-year-old may meet an insurer’s product eligibility while a much younger traveller with a recent serious medical event may need more detailed health assessment.
For senior travellers, age can potentially affect:
- whether the policy is available;
- the premium;
- maximum trip duration;
- annual multi-trip eligibility;
- availability of activity or sports extensions;
- medical questions;
- benefit limits; or
- product choice.
For example, Allianz currently publishes a dedicated Senior Travel option for ages 66–85 and states that its hazardous-activities add-on is not available to travellers above 65 under that product structure.[2]
This is an Allianz-specific condition, not a universal UAE senior-insurance rule.
Emergency Medical Coverage for Travellers Over 70
Emergency medical protection is usually one of the most important sections for an older traveller, but the largest headline number is not automatically the best policy.
When comparing medical protection, review:
- the emergency medical limit;
- hospital-treatment rules;
- outpatient emergency treatment;
- emergency dental cover;
- the deductible or excess;
- pre-existing-condition exclusions;
- medical-assistance requirements;
- direct-payment arrangements where available;
- reimbursement procedures; and
- medical-transport benefits.
Allianz’s current UAE Senior Travel page, for example, publishes emergency medical benefits of USD 250,000 on its Standard option and USD 500,000 on Premium.[2]
That is useful current evidence, but it should not be converted into:
“Every traveller over 70 needs exactly USD 500,000.”
No universal CBUAE rule establishes one medical-limit figure for every senior traveller.
Your destination, itinerary, personal financial risk and medical circumstances should influence the level you consider appropriate.
For the broader medical-cover framework, see
Emergency Medical Coverage Travel Insurance UAE
.
Why Seniors Should Check Medical Evacuation Separately
Medical evacuation and emergency medical treatment are related but distinct insurance benefits.
The purpose of evacuation cover is generally to deal with medically necessary transport when appropriate care cannot be obtained locally or when transfer is required under the insurance arrangement.
A senior traveller should check:
- whether medical evacuation is included;
- the applicable limit;
- whether it sits within the main medical limit;
- who decides that evacuation is medically necessary;
- whether the insurer or assistance company must authorise it;
- where the traveller can be transported;
- whether repatriation to the UAE is available; and
- how repatriation of mortal remains is handled.
Do not assume that every insurer automatically provides a specific reduced evacuation limit after age 70. The old BRERPSoft article made broad claims about universal senior evacuation sub-limits without adequate evidence. The safer approach is to read the benefit table for the policy actually being considered.
The CDC Yellow Book 2026 recommends that travellers with chronic illnesses consider both supplemental medical insurance and medical evacuation insurance when travelling internationally.[6]
Read our dedicated
Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Travel Insurance UAE
guide for more detail.
Do Senior Travel Insurance Policies Cover Pre-Existing Conditions?
Do not assume they do.
Age eligibility and coverage of existing medical conditions are separate questions.
A traveller may be eligible for a policy because they are 75, while the same policy may exclude or restrict claims linked to:
- diabetes;
- hypertension;
- heart disease;
- cancer history;
- respiratory conditions;
- recent surgery;
- ongoing investigations;
- medication changes; or
- other medical circumstances.
Allianz’s current UAE senior-product guidance states that pre-existing medical conditions are not automatically covered and advises travellers to review the health declaration carefully.[2]
This should not be generalised into:
“All senior insurers exclude every pre-existing condition.”
Another product may define or underwrite medical history differently.
If an insurer asks about a medical condition, symptoms, medication, hospital treatment or pending investigations, answer accurately.
For the complete medical-underwriting framework, use
Pre-Existing Conditions Travel Insurance UAE

Do Travellers Over 70 Always Need Medical Screening?
No universal UAE rule says every person becomes subject to mandatory medical screening on their 70th birthday.
Medical questions depend on the insurer and product.
Some insurers may ask detailed health questions. Others may use broader exclusions. A provider can also require additional information when a particular medical history is disclosed.
Possible information requested can include:
- diagnosed conditions;
- current prescription medicines;
- recent medication changes;
- hospital admissions;
- surgery;
- specialist treatment;
- pending investigations;
- recent symptoms; and
- planned treatment.
Do not upload or provide medical records unless the actual insurer or authorised process requests them.
Also avoid generic internet claims that every UAE insurer demands:
- a doctor’s clearance letter;
- a medical report;
- a medication list;
- 12 months of hospital history; or
- a fixed co-payment percentage
for every traveller over 70.
These requirements must be checked policy by policy.
Medication and Pre-Travel Health Planning for Older Travellers
Travel insurance cannot replace medical preparation.
The CDC Yellow Book 2026 advises travellers with chronic illnesses to prepare in advance, including ensuring they have sufficient medication for the trip plus extra in case of delays. It also recommends keeping medicines in hand luggage and carrying appropriate medical information.[6]
CDC also advises travellers with chronic conditions to consider pre-travel consultation several weeks before departure where appropriate, particularly when health conditions, medications or the itinerary require additional planning.[6]
Useful preparation can include:
- checking your medication supply;
- carrying an updated medication list;
- keeping medicines in appropriate original containers;
- checking destination restrictions on controlled medicines;
- carrying a medical summary where useful;
- keeping emergency contacts accessible;
- identifying healthcare facilities at the destination where relevant; and
- discussing fitness to travel with a healthcare professional when needed.
Insurance eligibility does not mean a person is medically fit for a particular flight, cruise, altitude or itinerary.
Travel Insurance for Seniors Over 70 Visiting the Schengen Area
Senior travellers who need a Schengen visa must satisfy two separate requirements:
- they must be eligible for the insurance policy at their age; and
- the policy must satisfy the applicable Schengen travel-medical-insurance requirement.
Article 15 of the Schengen Visa Code requires relevant uniform-visa applicants to hold adequate and valid travel medical insurance covering medical repatriation, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death, for the intended period and required Member State territory. The minimum coverage is EUR 30,000.[7]
Age does not replace these legal requirements.
A policy marketed as “senior insurance” still needs to meet the Schengen requirements when being used for a relevant visa application.
Likewise, a policy marketed for Schengen travel must still accept the applicant’s age.
Current Allianz UAE information states that its Schengen travel insurance can cover eligible travellers up to age 85.[2]
Do not claim that a policy has “100% VFS acceptance.” Visa decisions and supporting-document assessments remain with the relevant authorities.

What Should Seniors Check When Travelling to the USA or Canada?
The United States and Canada are common destinations for UAE residents visiting children, grandchildren or relatives abroad.
For these trips, focus particularly on:
- the geographical territory;
- emergency medical benefit;
- medical evacuation;
- deductible;
- existing medical conditions;
- maximum trip duration;
- emergency-assistance arrangements; and
- whether the policy specifically excludes or limits North America.
BRERPSoft does not recommend inventing a universal rule such as:
“All seniors travelling to the USA must buy exactly USD 500,000 or USD 1 million of medical insurance.”
No such universal CBUAE requirement applies to every senior traveller.
Instead, compare available medical protection against your circumstances and financial risk tolerance.
Also check whether a worldwide policy includes the USA and Canada. Some travel products offer separate geographical options with or without North America.
Why Trip Cancellation Can Be Important for Senior Travellers
Medical protection gets most of the attention, but cancellation insurance can also matter where a senior traveller has significant non-refundable bookings.
Potential expenses can include:
- international flights;
- cruises;
- package tours;
- hotel deposits;
- rail passes;
- event tickets; and
- prepaid excursions.
A cancellation section should be compared against your real financial exposure.
Check:
- which reasons qualify;
- the maximum benefit;
- the deductible;
- how pre-existing conditions affect cancellation;
- how illness of a close relative is treated;
- what evidence is required; and
- when cancellation protection begins.
A high medical limit cannot compensate for weak cancellation protection if your biggest risk is losing a large prepaid holiday cost.
Baggage and Travel Delay Protection for Seniors
Baggage insurance should not be evaluated only by its headline total.
Older travellers may carry:
- prescription medication;
- medical devices;
- glasses or hearing-related equipment;
- electronics;
- personal mobility items;
- clothing; and
- other valuables.
Check whether the policy limits particular categories and whether medical equipment is treated differently from ordinary baggage.
Also review:
- per-item limits;
- valuable-item limits;
- baggage-delay waiting periods;
- emergency-purchase benefits;
- airline reporting requirements;
- proof-of-ownership requirements; and
- unattended-property exclusions.
Do not assume that a lost-baggage benefit automatically reimburses the full replacement value of every item.
Travelling With Children and Grandchildren
A common UAE travel scenario involves parents or grandparents joining younger relatives on an overseas holiday.
Do not assume that everyone can always be placed on one family policy.
For example, Allianz Travel UAE currently states that its family policy is structured around adults below its family-age threshold, while travellers aged 66 or above use the separate Senior Travel product.[2]
This is a provider-specific example, but it illustrates an important comparison point.
Before purchasing a family trip:
- check which people can be included on one policy;
- confirm that every traveller has insurance for the same trip dates;
- check medical limits individually;
- compare family and senior cancellation benefits;
- check whether children and grandparents need separate policies; and
- keep everyone’s emergency-assistance details accessible.
For general family options, see
Family Travel Insurance UAE.
Can People Over 70 Buy Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance?
Possibly, but do not assume that the single-trip age limit and annual multi-trip age limit are identical.
Annual policies can also impose:
- a maximum age;
- a maximum number of days per individual trip;
- different geographical zones;
- USA/Canada restrictions;
- activity restrictions; or
- different medical terms.
The old BRERPSoft article claimed that annual insurance automatically saves a fixed percentage after a certain number of trips. That is not reliable.
The correct comparison is:
- estimate how many trips you genuinely expect to take;
- price comparable single-trip policies;
- obtain a current annual quote;
- compare the maximum duration per trip;
- compare destination territory; and
- compare benefits and exclusions.
Only then can you determine which structure offers better value.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost for Seniors Over 70?
There is no trustworthy permanent UAE price range that applies to every traveller over 70.
Premiums can vary according to:
- exact age;
- destination;
- trip duration;
- policy tier;
- medical benefits;
- deductible;
- number of travellers;
- geographical territory;
- annual versus single trip; and
- medical or underwriting circumstances where relevant.
Age can affect the premium, but do not publish claims such as:
“Travel insurance always costs three times more after 70 and four times more after 75.”
That requires reproducible market data and cannot be applied universally.
Likewise, do not compare a 30-year-old’s five-day Schengen quote with an 80-year-old’s worldwide policy and conclude that age alone caused the entire price difference.
For a fair comparison, use the same:
- destination;
- dates;
- trip duration;
- benefit tier; and
- policy type.
If BRERPSoft publishes future quote examples, every quote should include the quote date, age, destination, trip duration and selected plan.

Current UAE Travel Insurance Options for People Over 70
The purpose of this section is to show documented current eligibility—not to create a fake “7 Best” ranking.
| Product | Published Senior Eligibility | Useful Published Features | Main Limitation to Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allianz Travel UAE Senior Travel | Dedicated individual senior plan for ages 66–85 | Published emergency medical, evacuation, repatriation, cancellation, baggage and 24/7 assistance benefits. | Pre-existing medical conditions require careful review; travellers above the maximum age are not eligible. |
| ADNIC Travel Insurance | Published maximum age 80 | Travel-insurance protection with benefits governed by the policy and certificate. | Check current benefit limits, medical exclusions and exact eligibility before purchase. |
| Union Insurance Travel | Available to UAE residents under age 75 | Potential option for eligible travellers in the early 70s. | Not suitable once the traveller reaches the product’s published upper-age threshold. |
| GIG Gulf Travel Smart | Policy available to persons aged 70 or below | Useful comparison example for demonstrating that not every mainstream UAE product accepts over-70 applicants. | Not an over-70 option under the current published Travel Smart age rule. |
How to Compare Travel Insurance for Senior Citizens Over 70
Use this sequence rather than starting with the premium.
1. Check age eligibility
If the insurer does not accept your age, the rest of the comparison is irrelevant.
2. Check geographical territory
Confirm every destination, including the USA or Canada where relevant.
3. Compare emergency medical protection
Review the limit, deductible, exclusions and emergency-assistance process.
4. Check medical evacuation separately
Do not assume it is identical to the main medical benefit.
5. Review pre-existing-condition wording
This is particularly important for travellers using regular medication or managing chronic conditions.
6. Match cancellation cover to your financial exposure
A large prepaid holiday may justify greater attention to cancellation protection.
7. Review baggage and delay
Pay attention to item limits rather than just the total benefit.
8. Check maximum trip duration
A policy may accept your age but limit how long an individual trip can last.
9. Check activities
Cruises, skiing, trekking and other activities can have special terms.
10. Compare price last
Once you have shortlisted policies that meet your actual needs, compare the current premiums.
How Should Senior Travellers Prepare for a Claim?
Claims requirements vary by policy, but preparation can make an emergency easier to manage.
Before travelling, save:
- policy certificate;
- full policy wording;
- emergency-assistance number;
- policy number;
- medical declaration or screening confirmation where applicable;
- relevant medication information; and
- claims contact information.
If an emergency occurs:
- seek appropriate medical care;
- contact the insurer or assistance company as required by the policy;
- follow authorisation procedures for major treatment or evacuation;
- retain medical reports;
- keep invoices and receipts;
- save prescriptions;
- keep evidence of travel dates; and
- retain correspondence with the insurer.
For example, GIG’s current UAE travel information states that medical claims require contact and approval plus supporting medical documentation under its policy procedures.[5]
That does not mean every insurer follows exactly the same claim procedure.
What If a UAE Senior Traveller Has an Insurance Complaint?
Start with the insurance company’s formal complaint process.
Sanadak provides a UAE complaint-resolution route for eligible disputes involving licensed insurance companies.
Its current eligibility criteria generally require the consumer to complain to the insurance company first. Sanadak asks whether 15 calendar days have elapsed after that complaint without a satisfactory written response, subject to the other eligibility conditions.[8]
This is important because the old BRERPSoft article incorrectly turned that 15-day complaint criterion into a universal claim-settlement deadline.
It is not.
Do not publish:
“All UAE travel-insurance claims must be paid within 15 days.”
Common Mistakes Seniors Make When Comparing Travel Insurance
1. Assuming every insurer covers people over 70
Current UAE products clearly have different maximum ages.
2. Choosing a policy only because it says “senior”
Read the benefits and exclusions rather than relying on the product name.
3. Assuming age eligibility includes existing medical conditions
These are separate questions.
4. Buying the cheapest policy before checking medical protection
Compare essential protection first and price second.
5. Believing every senior needs medical screening
Check the actual insurer’s requirements.
6. Accepting internet claims about fixed co-pay percentages
Use the policy wording rather than generic age-based assumptions.
7. Assuming every policy provides cashless treatment everywhere
Direct payment can depend on assistance arrangements, medical facility and authorisation.
8. Ignoring medical evacuation
Check it separately from ordinary emergency medical expenses.
9. Assuming Schengen-labelled insurance guarantees the visa
Insurance is only one part of the visa application.
10. Treating annual cover as automatically cheaper
Compare actual annual and single-trip quotes for your travel pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance for Seniors Over 70
Can I get travel insurance if I am over 70?
Yes. Some UAE travel-insurance products accept applicants beyond age 70. Current official examples include Allianz Senior Travel up to age 85 and ADNIC travel insurance up to age 80, subject to their terms.
Is there a maximum age for travel insurance in the UAE?
There is no single UAE-wide maximum age. Each product has its own eligibility. Current examples range from policies stopping at 70 to policies accepting eligible travellers up to 80 or 85.
Can I get travel insurance at age 75?
Potentially. Some current UAE products accept travellers at 75 while others do not. Check the exact upper age limit and any age-specific terms before requesting a quote.
Can an 80-year-old get travel insurance from the UAE?
Potentially. ADNIC currently publishes a maximum travel-insurance age of 80, while Allianz’s dedicated Senior Travel product covers eligible UAE residents up to age 85. Check how the provider defines its maximum-age rule.
Can an 85-year-old get UAE travel insurance?
Some products may allow it. Allianz Travel UAE currently publishes a Senior Travel plan with a maximum age of 85 at purchase. Do not assume that other providers use the same maximum.
Does GIG Gulf cover travellers over 70?
GIG Gulf’s current Travel Smart policy states that it is available to people aged 70 or below. Based on that published wording, Travel Smart is not an over-70 product.
Do senior travellers always have to complete medical screening?
No universal rule applies. An insurer may ask health questions or request additional medical information depending on its policy and the medical circumstances disclosed.
Are pre-existing medical conditions covered for seniors?
Not automatically. Coverage depends on the policy definition, health declaration, exclusions and any underwriting decision. Age eligibility alone does not confirm medical-condition coverage.
Can seniors with diabetes get travel insurance?
Potentially, but diabetes may be relevant to a policy’s pre-existing-condition rules. Check the medical questions, medication requirements and policy terms before relying on coverage.
Can seniors with high blood pressure get travel insurance?
Potentially. Hypertension can be relevant to medical disclosure or exclusions depending on the insurer. Answer all medical questions accurately.
What is the best travel insurance for someone over 70?
There is no universal best provider. Start with products that accept your age, then compare destination, medical protection, evacuation, cancellation, existing-condition terms, trip duration and price.
How much does travel insurance cost after age 70?
There is no permanent universal price. Premiums can depend on exact age, destination, trip duration, policy tier, territory and medical circumstances. Obtain current like-for-like quotes.
Does senior travel insurance cover medical evacuation?
Some policies include medical evacuation, but the limits and authorisation rules vary. Check the benefit separately rather than assuming it matches the general medical limit.
Can seniors over 70 get Schengen travel insurance?
Yes, if the insurer accepts their age and the policy satisfies the applicable Schengen travel-medical-insurance requirements. Article 15 sets a minimum medical-insurance level of EUR 30,000 for relevant visa applicants.
Can a grandparent be included in a family travel-insurance policy?
It depends on the insurer. Some products require older family members to purchase a separate senior policy. Check the family eligibility rules before buying.
Can seniors buy annual multi-trip travel insurance?
Possibly. Annual products can use different age and trip-duration limits from single-trip products. Check the specific annual policy before assuming eligibility.
Is travel insurance worth considering for people over 70?
Travel insurance can help protect against eligible medical emergencies, cancellation, baggage and other risks, but its usefulness depends on the benefits and exclusions of the policy and the traveller’s circumstances.
Should I carry extra medication when travelling?
CDC travel-health guidance recommends that travellers with chronic illnesses take enough medication for the planned trip plus extra for unexpected delays and keep important medicines accessible during travel.
